Procedure

To a ice chilled solution of 1-benylpiperazine (25.0 g, 0.14 moles) in 140 mL dimethylformamide was added potassium carbonate (24.0 g, 1.25 eq.) and methyl 4-bromocrotonate (18.6 mL, 0.99 eq.). The solution was warmed to room temperature and stirred 24 h. The solution was filtered. Water was added and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organics were washed with water twice and brine, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and evaportated to afford methyl -4-(4-benzylpiperazin-1-yl)but-2-enoate (35.2 g, 92%) as a brown-orange liquid. MS (ESI+) for m/z 275 (M+H)+.
