tert-butyl 4-(5-chloro-1H-indol-3-yl)piperidine-1-carboxylate (1 g; 2.99 mmol) was dissolved in 7.5 mL of a 4M solution of HCl in dioxane. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours and was concentrated under reduced pressure to give quantitatively 5-chloro-3-(piperidin-4-yl)-1H-indole hydrochloride as a solid.
