Procedure
To a stirred solution of methyl (4S)-3-methyl-2,5-dioxo-1′,3′-dihydrospiro[imidazolidine-4,2′-indene]-5′-carboxylate (1.40 g, 5.10 mmol) in THF (30 mL) and H2O (15 mL) was added 1.0 N aqueous lithium hydroxide (20.4 mL, 20.4 mmol) and the reaction mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 18 h. The THF was removed in vacuo and the resulting mixture was adjusted to pH=1 by addition of 1.0 N HCl. The precipitate was isolated by filtration, washed with H2O, and dried in vacuo to give the title compound. MS: m/z=260.9 (M+1); 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 12.85 (br s, 1H), 10.98 (br s, 1H), 7.82 (s, 1H), 7.81 (d, 1H, J=8.4 Hz), 7.37 (d, 1H, J=8.4 Hz), 3.38-3.28 (m, 4H), 2.56 (2, 3H).
