To a solution of 4-chloro-3-fluorobenzaldehyde (8 g, 50.5 mmol) and ammonium acetate (9.72 g, 126 mmol) in acetic acid (168 mL) was added nitromethane (8.16 mL, 151 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated at reflux for 5 h and cooled down. Water (100 mL) was added, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 h. The solid was filtered, washed by water, and dried under vacuum. The solid was purified by flash chromatography (0-20% EtOAc/heptane) to yield clean product 4.2 g in 41% yield. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ ppm 7.92 (d, J=13.7 Hz, 1H), 7.54 (d, J=13.8 Hz, 1H), 7.49 (d, J=7.5 Hz, 1H), 7.33 (dd, J=2.0, 9.3 Hz, 1H), 7.31-7.28 (m, 1H).
