Procedure
A stirred mixture of 4-bromo-2-methylbenzoic acid (6 g, 27.9 mmol), iodomethane (5.21 mL, 84 mmol) and potassium carbonate (11.57 g, 84 mmol) in DMF (60 mL) was stirred at room temperature overnight. The reaction mixture was partitioned between water (250 mL) and 4:1 hexanes:ethyl acetate (650 mL). The organic layer was washed with water and dried over Na2SO4. The solvent was removed under vacuum to give 6.39 g of desired product as an oil in 100% yield. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CD3OD) δ ppm 7.86-7.65 (m, 7H) 7.50 (br. s., 2H) 3.88 (s, 3H) 2.56 (s, 3H).
