Procedure

A mixture of laevulinic acid (7 g.), acetaldehyde N1 -(2-methylthioquinazolin-4-yl)-p-methoxyphenylhydrazone (3.5 g.) and a saturated solution of hydrogen chloride in ether (2 ml.) was heated at 95° - 100° C. for 22 hours. The mixture was poured into water (300 ml.), and the precipitated brown solid was collected by filtration and dissolved in chloroform (100 ml.). The solution was filtered and the filtrate was extracted with 2 N- ammonia solution (4 × 50 ml.). The extracts were combined and acidified to pH3 with glacial acetic acid. The mixture was filtered, and the solid crystallised from methanol to give 5-methoxy-2-methyl-1-(2-methylthioquinazolin-4-yl)indol-3-ylacetic acid, as a pale yellow crystalline solid, m.p. 175°-178° C.
