Procedure

Aqueous sodium hydroxide (20 ml. of 5.15N) added to a suspension of 4,5-dimethoxy-2-[(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)acetyl]phenylacetic acid (10.0 g., 0.0267 mole) and hydroxylamine hydrochloride (4.9 g., 0.07 mole) in 50 ml. of water provides a clear solution which is heated for 1 hr. at 90° C. The solution is stirred with decolorizing charcoal, filtered, acidified to a pH of 3 with concentrated hydrochloric acid, and then chilled to provide an amber gum which is separated by decanting the supernatent liquid. Triturating the gum with ethyl acetate affords 2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenylacetyl)-4,5-dimethoxyphenylacetic acid oxime, m.p. 134°-138° C.
