Sodium hydride (0.42 g, 10.61 mmol) was added to a solution of 1,3-propanediol (2.30 mL, 31.83 mmol) in DMF (22 mL) at 0° C. and the mixture was stirred at rt for 20 min. To the resultant heterogeneous mixture was added 6-chloronicotinonitrile (1.50 g, 10.6 mmol) in one portion. The mixture was stirred at rt for 18 h, poured into water, and filtered. The filtrate was extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4), and concentrated under reduced pressure to give the product (1.56 g, 83%) as a white solid. 1H NMR (CD2Cl2) δ 8.47 (d, 1H), 7.82-7.79 (m, 1H), 6.84-6.82 (m, 1H), 4.53 (t, 2H), 3.75 (t, 2H), 2.06-1.99 (m, 2H).
