Procedure
To a solution of 0.147 g (0.414 mmol) of methyl 6-(6-phenylhexanoyl)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrofuro[2,3-c]pyridine-2-carboxylate in 10 ml of tetrahydrofuran, 1 ml of 1 N aqueous sodium hydroxide was added, followed by stirring at room temperature for 1 day. The reaction mixture was acidified with 10 ml of 1 N hydrochloric acid and extracted with diethyl ether 3 times. The combined organic layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate; the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure to yield the desired product.
