Procedure
To a solution of 0.16 ml (1.2 mmol) of oxalyl chloride in 30 ml of dichloromethane, 0.17 ml (2.5 mmol) of dimethyl sulfoxide was added dropwise at -78° C., followed by stirring for 5 minutes. To the solution, a solution of 0.303 g (0.820 mmol) of 4-(6,7-dihydro-4H-furo[3,2-c]pyridin-5-ylsulfonyl)phenylphenylmethanol in 10 ml of dichloromethane was added at -78° C., followed by stirring for 15 minutes. To this mixture, 0.69 ml (4.9 mmol) of triethylamine was added; the mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature. After the reaction mixture was washed with water, the water layer was re-extracted with diethyl ether. The combined organic layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate; the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure. The resulting crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane/ethyl acetate=3/1) and washed with diethyl ether-hexane to yield the desired product.
