40% methylamine--methanol solution (9.80 g, 126 mmol) was added to 4-methoxy-3-isochromanone (7.50 g, 42.1 mmol) in methanol (40 ml), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. Evaporation of the solvent gave the desired compound 2-hydroxymethyl-(α-methoxy-N-methylphenyl-acetamide (8.50 g, 96.5%) as white crystals.
