A solution of 26.6 g of 4'-(6-hydroxyhexyloxy)(1,1')-biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid, 16 g of epoxystyrene and 16 g of triethylamine in 300 ml of tetrahydrofuran is heated at the boiling point for 140 hours. It is diluted with 1000 ml of methylene chloride, washed twice with 2N hydrochloric acid and dried over sodium sulfate. After concentration under reduced pressure, the residue is crystallized from ethanol. 2-Hydroxy-2-phenylethyl 4'-(6-hydroxyhexyloxy)-(1,1')-biphenyl-4-carboxylate is obtained; melting point: 148°-150°.
