To a solution of 160 mg of 3-(trifluoromethyl)phenol in 2 mL of DMF was added 104 mg of potassium carbonate and 160 mg of intermediate 3.1b. After stirring overnight at 50° C. the reaction mixture was partitioned between water and ethyl acetate. The organic extracts were washed with brine and dried (Na2SO4). The solvent was evaporated to give a yellow syrup that was used directly in the next step.
