A solution of methyl 3-(5-chloro-2-iminopyridin-1(2H)-yl)-2-oxobutanoate hydrobromide (8.51 g, 26.3 mmol) in MeOH (50 mL) was heated to reflux for 16 h, cooled to room temperature, and concentrated to give a white solid. The solid was dissolved in a mixture of EtOAc and saturated NaHCO3, the aqueous phase was discarded and the organic phase was washed with saturated NaHCO3 (1×), water (1×), brine (1×), dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated to give methyl 6-chloro-3-methylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-2-carboxylate (5.68 g, 25.3 mmol, 96% yield) as an off white solid.
