When K. lactis H3765, from which the xylose reductase had been deleted, was grown in 1% w/v galactose and 2% w/v xylose, 8.0±0.8 g xylonate I−1 were produced at a rate of 0.13 g I−1 h−1. Less than 0.4 g xylitol I−1 was produced. K. lactis H3763, from which the xylose dehydrogenase had been deleted, produced 2.0±0.1 g xylonate I−1 with 14.4±0.5 g xylitol I−1 when grown under the same conditions.
