To 1.8 g of malonic acid were added 18 mL of pyridine, 2.0 g of 2-fluoro-4-(2-pyridylmethoxy)benzaldehyde and 0.21 mL of piperidine. The mixture was stirred at 75° C. for 1.5 hours and further stirred at 95° C. for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was cooled with ice, water was added thereto, and 10% hydrochloric acid was added to adjust the pH to 4. The resulting precipitate was separated by filtration to give 2.0 g of the title compound (85% yield).
