A solution of 3-(3-pyridyl)-1-propyl (2S)-N-(tert-butyloxycarbonyl)pyrrolidine-2-carboxylate (3.00 g; 9 mmol) in methylene chloride (50 mL) and trifluoroacetic acid (5 mL) was stirred at room temperature for three hours. Saturated potassium carbonate was added until the pH was basic, and the reaction mixture was extracted with methylene chloride (3×). The combined organic extracts were dried and concentrated to yield 2.00 g (95%) of the free amine as a thick oil. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3): δ 1.87-2.20 (m, 6H); 2.79 (m, 2H); 3.03 (m, 2H total); 3.07 (m, 2H); 3.84 (m, 1H); 4.24 (m, 2H); 7.32 (m, 1H); 7.60 (m, 1H); 8.57 (m, 2H).
