Procedure
70.7 g (0.55 mole) of 4-chlorophenol and 75.9 g (0.55 mole) of potassium carbonate are heated under reflux in 500 ml of toluene for 2 hours, using a water separator. 133 g (0.433 mole) of 1-chloro-4,5-dibromo-3,3-dimethyl-2-pentanone in 100 ml of toluene are then added at 70° C. The reaction mixture is stirred at 100° C. for 5 hours and is then allowed to cool, and is washed with water and dilute sodium hydroxide solution, dried over sodium sulphate and concentrated. 109.2 g (63.3% of theory) of 1-(4-chlorophenoxy)-4,5-dibromo-3,3-dimethyl-2-pentanone of refractive index nD20 1.5363 are obtained. ##STR108##
