A mixture of 4-(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-2-pyrrolidone (42 mg, 0.2 mmol), 3-phenylpropyl bromide (44 mg, 0.22 mmol), potassium carbonate (83 mg, 0.6 mmol) and N,N-dimethylformamide (3 ml) is allowed to stir at 100° C. After 18 hours, the reaction mixture is cooled to 25° C. The solid is filtered off and the filtrate is concentrated under vacuum. The same working up procedure gives 47 mg (72%) of 4-(3-(3-phenylpropoxy)-4-methoxyphenyl)-2-pyrrolidone: 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.34-7.17 (m, 5H), 6.82 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 1H), 6.78 (d, J=12 Hz, 1H), 6.70 (s, 1H), 6.02 (b, 1H), 4.03 (t, J=7.2 Hz, 2H), 3.84 (s, 3H), 3.75 (t, J=8.8 Hz, 1H), 3.63-3.55 (m, 1H), 3.36 (t, J=8.8 Hz, 1H), 2.82 (t, J=8.0 Hz, 2H), 2.71 (dd, J=16.8, 8.8 Hz, 2H), 2.47 (dd, J=16.6, 8.8 Hz), 2.20-2.13 (m, 2H).
