3-(8-Methyl-3-phenyl-cinnolin-4-yl)-phenylamine (0.031 g, 0.1 mmol) and (4-formyl-phenyl)-acetic acid methyl ester (0.07 g, 0.4 mmol) were mixed in DMF (4 mL) and then treated with NaBH(OAc)3 (0.43 g, 2.0 mml) and acetic acid (0.4 mL). After stirring at 40° C. for 4 hours the mixture was quenched with water and then extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic residue was purified by silica gel chromatography using 5-50% EtOAc/hexanes as eluent to provide (4-{[3-(8-methyl-3-phenyl-cinnolin-4-yl)-phenylamino]-methyl}-phenyl)-acetic acid methyl ester as a gum which was used for the next reaction. MS (EI) m/z 474;
