Methyl iodide (0.55 g, 3.86 mmol) was added dropwise to a mixture of ethyl 5,6-dihydro-6-hydroxy-9-methyl-4H-pyrrolo[3,2,1-ij]quinoline-2-carboxylate (0.50 g, 1.93 mmol), 60% sodium hydride (0.08 g, 1.93 mmol) and tetrahydrofuran (20 ml) with stirring at room temperature, and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for another 2 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into ice water and extracted three times with ethyl acetate, and the extract solution was washed with a 5% aqueous sodium chloride solution and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure and the resulting residue was purified by a silica gel column chromatography (eluent: ethyl acetate/n-hexane=5/95) to obtain 0.31 g of ethyl 5,6-dihydro-9-methyl-6-methoxy-4H-pyrrolo[3,2,1-ij]quinoline-2-carboxylate.
