Procedure
To a mixture of 30 g of 2,5-difluorobenzoyl chloride and 23.5 g of 1,3-dimethoxybenzene in 300 ml 1,2-dichloroethane, 23 g of aluminum chloride is added in portions with the internal temperature maintained at approximately 8°-12° C. The reaction mixture is stirred 0.5 hr and refluxed one hr. The reaction mixture is poured into concentrated hydrochloric acid and ice. The organic layer is separated, washed, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and evaporated. Trituration of the crude residue gives 2',5'-difluoro-2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone, mp 109° C. followed by recrystallization from toluene.
