Procedure

160 mg of sodium hydride (as a 60% w/w dispersion in mineral oil) were added to a solution of 750 mg of 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-3,3-dimethyl-4-methanesulfonyloxy-1-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-2-butanol in 12 ml of dimethylformamide, and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. At the end of this time, the reaction mixture was poured into ice-water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with an aqueous solution of ammonium chloride, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified by preparative thin layer chromatography, using a 1:4 by volume mixture of ethyl acetate and hexane as the developing solvent, to afford 170 mg (yield 31%) of the title compound, melting at 90°-102° C.
