A mixture of ethyl 2-(2-tert-butoxy-2-oxoethyl)indane-2-carboxylate from Step A (2.48 g, 8.15 mmol) and 1.0 N sodium hydroxide (8.96 mL, 8.96 mmol) in THF (50 mL), H2O (10 mL), and EtOH (20 mL) was stirred at ambient temperature for 18 h. The mixture was acidified with hydrochloric acid to about pH 3 and extracted with EtOAc (3×50 mL). The combined organic layers were dried over Na2 SO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo, to give the title compound. MS: m/z=340 (M+Na+CH3 CN).
