Treatment of α-vinyltryptophan methyl ester in 1.1 methanol:water with two equivalents of sodium hydroxide, neutralization of the reaction mixture with 1 N aqueous hydrochloric acid, and purification of the crude amino acid on DOWEX 50W-X4 cation exchange resin (elution with water and then 2 N aqueous hydrochloric acid) gives α-vinyltryptophan hydrochloride.
