To a solution of methyl 2-methyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-2-carboxylate (1.80 g, 9.46 mmol) in THF/water/MeOH (4/1/1 mL respectively) was added lithium hydroxide monohydrate (1.19 g, 28.4 mmol). The reaction mixture stirred at ambient temperature 4 h, acidified to pH 3 with 1 N HCl and extracted with Et2O (2×25 mL). Combined organics were washed (water, brine), dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo affording the title compound as a white solid. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ ppm 1.39 (s, 3H), 2.83 (d, J=15.9 Hz, 2 H), 3.50 (d, J=15.9 Hz, 2 H), 7.12-7.23 (m, 4H).
