Procedure

A solution of Example 17K in dimethyl sulfoxide (8 mL) was treated with potassium carbonate (237 mg, 1.71 mmol) and iodobenzene diacetate (552 mg, 1.71 mmol) followed by stirring for 1 hour. The mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate and the organic layer was washed with water and saturated sodium chloride solution, dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford a brown oil. Purification by chromatography on a 100 g silica gel cartridge, eluting with 15-80% ethyl acetate in hexanes, afforded the title compound as a rigid foam (166 mg, 23% over two steps). 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3) δ ppm 8.48 (s, 1H), 7.75 (m, 2H), 7.67 (s, 1H), 7.15 (m, 2H), 3.82 (s, 3H), 3.68 (m, 1H), 3.64 (m, 1H), 3.07 (s, 3H), 2.29 (m, 1H), 1.62 (m, 1H), 1.51 (m, 1H), 1.23 (m, 2H), 1.07 (m, 1H), 0.94 (m, 6H), 0.82 (m, 1H); MS (ESI+) m/z 474 (M+H)+.
