To a solution of 3-chloro-4,5-dihydroxy-benzaldehyde (8.0 g, 46 mmol) and BrClCH2 (89 g, 0.70 mol) in dry DMF (300 mL) was added Cs2CO3 (228 g, 0.700 mol). The mixture was stirred at 60° C. overnight and was then poured into water. The resulting mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined extracts were washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the title compound (35.0 g; 100%).
