A mixture of 4-hydroxy-1-oxo-6-(4-propoxy-phenoxy)-1,2-dihydro-isoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid butyl ester (495 mg, 1.20 mmol), POBr3 (379 mg, 1.32 mmol), and toluene was microwaved at 110° C. for 25 min. Subsequently, the mixture was diluted with EtOAc, washed with aqueous NaHCO3 and saturated NaCl solution before it was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo to give the crude title product (509 mg) that was used in the next step without further purification. 1H NMR (200 MHz, CDCl3): δ (ppm)=11.74 (s, 1H), 8.19 (d, 1H, J=9.2 Hz), 7.60-7.46 (m, 2H), 7.07-6.92 (m, 4H), 4.46 (t, 2H, =7.1 Hz), 3.94 (t, 2H, J=6.6 Hz), 1.83 (m, 4H), 1.45 (m, 2H), 1.10-0.94 (m, 6H).
