A solution of 5.3 g (12.3 mmol) of N-(2,4-dimethoxy-benzyl),N-(2-ethoxycarbonyl-5-hydroxy-benzyl)glycine ethyl ester, 1.8 mL (15.4 mmol) benzylbromide, and 4.4 g (13.5 mmol) cesium carbonate in 35 mL of anhydrous DMF was stirred for 18 hours. The reaction mixture was partitioned between diethyl ether and water, and the organic fraction washed with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate, brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered through a pad of silica gel, and concentrated under reduced pressure to 6.4 g of the title compound.
