To the product from step 2 was added ethyl acetate (10 mL) followed by 4 M hydrogen chloride in 1,4-dioxane (3649 μl, 14.60 mmol). After stirring at room temperature for 3 hours, the precipitate was collected by filtration, washed with additional ethyl acetate, and dried to give 1-(trans-3-aminocyclobutyl)-3,3-dimethyl-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin-2(3H)-one hydrochloride (680 mg, 2.54 mmol, 87% yield) as tan solid.
