Solid 3-bromophenol (10.0 g, 58 mmol) was added portion wise to a stirred suspension of K2CO3 in acetone (100 mL) at room temperature. Sodium iodide (NaI, 1.0 g) was added, followed by ethyl-4-bromobutyrate (9.2 mL, 64 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated at 80° C. overnight, cooled to room temperature, diluted with water and extracted with ethylacetate to give ethyl 4-(3-bromophenoxyl)butanoate.
