To a solution of 2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenoxy)acetonitrile (3.8 g) in MeOH—H2O (1:1), hydroxyamine hydrochloride was added and the mixture was stirred at 100° C. for 3 hours. After distilling off the solvent under reduced pressure, the residue was recovered by filtration and washed with water and hexane to give a crude form of the titled compound (4.9 g).
