Procedure
A mixture of 2,6-dichloro-5-fluoronicotinic acid (1.0 g, 4.8 mmol), 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (0.69 mL, 9.5 mmol) and sodium hydroxide (0.57 g, 14.3 mmol) in water (24 mL) is stirred at 80° C. for 40 hours. After cooling to 0° C., the mixture is acidified with conc. hydrochloric acid (pH 2). The resulting white precipitate is collected by filtration and dried to give 1.05 g (80% yield) of the title compound as white solid.
