Procedure

(S)-methyl 4-isopropyl-3-methyl-2-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrido[3,2-b]pyrazine-7-carboxylate (0.649 g, 2.46 mmol) was dissolved in THF (8 mL) and cooled to 0° C. under nitrogen atmosphere. Sodium hydride (60% susp. in mineral oil, 0.112 g, 2.80 mmol) was added in one portion. The reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred for 30 min. It was then cooled to −50° C. and LiAlH4 (1M in THF, 9.80 mL, 9.80 mmol) was added dropwise over 10 min. The reaction mixture was kept at −30-(−20)° C. for 1 h, cooled to below −50° C. and slowly quenched with MeOH (5 mL). The resulting solution was warmed to room temperature and subjected to preparative HPLC (1-30% acetonitrile in water, TFA buffered) to afford the title compound as a grey solid (TFA salt, 450 mg, 52%). [M+H] calc'd for C12H17N3O2, 236. found, 236.
