3′-(2-Phenoxy-ethylsulfanylmethyl)-biphenyl-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester was prepared as described for 4′-(2-phenoxy-ethylsulfanylmethyl)-biphenyl-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester. 3′-(2-Hydroxy-ethylsulfanylmethyl)-biphenyl-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (2.1 g, 6.64 mmol, 1 eq.) in anhydrous THF was treated with phenol (0.88 g, 9.30 mmol, 1.4 eq.), triphenylphosphine (2.44 g, 9.30 mmol, 1.4 eq.), and diisopropyl azidocarboxylate (1.88 g, 1.83 mL, 9.30 mmol, 1.4 eq.).
