Microencapsulated Pd(OAc)2 (prepared as described in Example 1, 0.25 g, 2 mol %, based on palladium content) was added to a solution of 4-bromo nitrobenzene (1 mmol), trimethylphenyltin (1.5 mmol) and ammonium acetate (3 mmol) in 1,2-dimethoxyethane (5 mL) and stirred at 90° C. for 6 h. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, diluted with ether (50 mL) and filtered through a polyethylene frit (20-micron porosity). The filtrate was washed with water (2×20 mL), brine (20 mL) and dried (MgSO4). Evaporation under reduced pressure and purification by column chromatography gave 4-nitrobiphenyl, 90%: IR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR identical with sample obtained from the Suzuki reaction in Example 5.
