Procedure
A mixture of 2-chloro-6-methylnicotinic acid (25.00 g) and 33% methylamine in ethanol (100 ml) was heated in a pressure vessel at 100° C. for 18 hours. The mixture was cooled, diluted with water (200 ml) and acidified to pH 2-3 with concentrated hydrochloric acid. The mixture was cooled in an ice bath and filtered to give 6-methyl-2-methylaminonicotinic acid hemihydrochloride hydrate, m.p. 195°-197° C.
