16.5 g of an 80% dispersion of sodium hydride in oil are suspended in 200 ml of dry tetrahydrofuran. A solution of 100 g of 3,4-dichlorophenylacetonitrile in 500 ml of tetrahydrofuran is added dropwise at 20° C. over 30 minutes and the reaction mixture is then stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The mixture is cooled to -20° C., a solution of 118 g of 1-bromo-2-tetrahydropyranyloxyethane in 100 ml of tetrahydrofuran is added, the mixture is allowed to warm up to room temperature and, after 2 hours, a solution of 50 g of ammonium chloride in 3 liters of water is added. Extraction is carried out with 1.5 liters of ether and the extract is washed with a saturated solution of NaCl, decanted, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated under vacuum. The residue is chromatographed on silica gel using CH2Cl2 and then ethyl acetate (95/5 v/v) as the eluent. The pure product fractions are concentrated under vacuum to give 118 g of an oil.
