1-(2-Methylphenyl)-4-chloro-6-methylpyrrolo[3,2-c]quinoline (1.5 g, 4.9 mmol) and methylamine (33% in ethanol, 50 ml) were heated to 150° C. in a pressure vessel for 16 hours, then the solvent evaporated. Chromatography (silica gel, 2% methanolic ammonia in dichloromethane) and recrystallisation from aqueous ethanol yielded 1-(2-methylphenyl)-4-methylamino-6-methylpyrrolo[3,2-c]quinoline (0.62 g),m.p. 129°-130°.
