A mixture of 4-(5-bromo-3-cyanoindol-1-yl)benzoic acid ethyl ester (0.1 g), 4-methoxyphenylboronic acid (0.066 g), potassium carbonate (0.09 g) in a mixed solvent of 1,2-dimethoxyethane (3 mL), ethanol (0.5 mL) and water (0.5 mL) was stirred in the presence of tetrakis(triphenylphosphine) palladium catalyst at 90° C. for 18 hours. This reaction mixture was poured into water, and the precipitated solid was collected by filtration. This solid was washed with water, dried under reduced pressure at 50° C. to give the title compound (0.098 g).
