Procedure

To a suspension of 10.5 g (67.3 mmol) 5-fluoro-2-hydroxybenzoic acid and 37.1 g (269 mmol) fine mesh K2CO3 in 250 mL of acetone was added 18.0 μL (151.2 mmol) benzyl bromide and the resulting mixture was refluxed for 5 h. After cooling to room temperature, the solids were filtered off, the filtrate was concentrated, loaded onto a silica gel column, and eluted with EtOAc/hexanes to provide 3-1 as a white solid. Data for 3-1: 1HNMR (500 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.55 (m, 1H), 7.4-7.3 (m, 10H), 7.1 (m, 1H), 6.95 (m, 1H), 5.35 (s, 2H), 5.1 (s, 2H) ppm.
