0.18 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane was added to a solution of 210 mg of N,N-dimethyl-3-[2-(4-phenylbutyl)phenoxy]propylamine [prepared as described in step (a) above] in 5 ml of ethyl acetate, and the resulting mixture was concentrated by distillation under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was dissolved in a small amount of ethyl acetate, and the resulting solution was allowed to stand at room temperature. The crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration to give 210 mg (yield 89%) of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 104°-106° C.
