0.39 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane was added to a solution of 230 mg of N,N-dimethyl-2-[2-(4-phenylbutyl)phenoxy]ethylamine [prepared as described in step (a) above] in 5 ml of ethyl acetate, and the resulting mixture was allowed to stand at room temperature. The crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration, washed with ethyl acetate and dried in vacuo, to give 241 mg (yield 93%) of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 170°-173° C.
