0.59 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane was added to a solution of 490 mg of N,N-diethyl-2-[2-(4-phenylbutyl)phenoxy]ethylamine [prepared as described in step (a) above] in 5 ml of ethyl acetate, and the crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration, washed with ethyl acetate and dried in vacuo, to give 216 mg (yield 40%) of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 135°-138° C.
