Following a procedure similar to that described in Example 1(c), a solution of 267 mg of 1-{2-[4-(2-cyanophenyl) butyl]phenoxy}-3-dimethylamino-2-propanol [prepared as described in step (b) above] in a suitable amount of ethyl acetate was treated with 0.5 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane. The solvent was then removed by distillation under reduced pressure, and the residue was dried in vacuo, to give 294 mg of the title compound as a colorless oil.
