Following a procedure similar to that described in Example 1(c), 2 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane were added to a solution of 0.29 g of 1-{2-[4-(3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)butyl]phenoxy}-3-dimethylamino-2-propanol [prepared as described in step (b) above] in ethyl acetate. The solvent was then removed by distillation under reduced pressure, and the resulting residue was dried in vacuo, to give 320 mg of the title compound as a colorless oil.
