530 mg of diethanolamine were added to a solution of 345 mg of 2-{2-[4-(3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)butyl]phenoxymethyl}oxirane [prepared as described in Example 11(a)] in 10 ml of tetrahydrofuran, and the resulting mixture was stirred at 50° C. for 24 hours. At the end of this time, the solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure, and the resulting residue was purified by column chromatography through silica gel, using a 7:1 by volume mixture of methylene chloride and methanol as the eluent, to give 333 mg of the title compound as a colorless oil.
