Following a procedure similar to that described in Example 1(c), a solution of 250 mg of 3-dimethylamino-1-{2-[4-(2-methoxyphenyl)butyl]phenoxy}-2-propanol [prepared as described in step (b) above] in 5 ml of ethyl acetate was treated with 0.35 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane. The solvent was then removed by distillation under reduced pressure, and the residue was dried in vacuo, to give 275 mg (a quantitative yield) of the title compound as a colorless oil.
