1.55 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane were added to a solution of 920 mg of 1-[2-(4-phenylbutyl)phenoxy]-3-(4-phenylpiperazin-1-yl)-2-propanol [prepared as described in step (a) above] in 20 ml of ethyl acetate, and the resulting mixture was allowed to stand at room temperature for 1 hour. The crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration and dried in vacuo, to give 990 mg (yield 92%) of the title compound as a colorless powder, melting at 102°-104° C.
